Kay Redfield Jamison refers to her mind as “unquiet.” Dianne C. McDaniel called hers “broken.” Robert Lowell referred to his experiences as “madness,” those of a “headless heart,” and “almost off the rails.” For Nina Simone, what she went through was a “spiritual mandate,” a source of inspiration and anger.
