Ode to Mom
Poetry • 2017 • A Meditation on Seeing the Self in Another
Some of what I write is heavy. Some of it’s light.
But all of it’s honest.
If you like that kind of space, I’d be honored to have you here.
Ode to Mom
A poem by Drew Gaither, 2017
I once saw a woman walking alone, And I wished to approach her so, But oh, how my willingness was my foe, I left that woman to walk alone. I, too, joined her in her solace, And so, the road occupied two, I could not decide what to do, I left us alone in our solace. After a day’s walk on this road, It ended suddenly and without heed, To turn around was my need, But I couldn’t look back at the road. The woman turned and looked at me, Which caused me to jump with fright, And as if by magick or the world’s plight, I saw in that woman me.
